backings...

Quite often customers ask me what types of backings they can use for their machine quilted quilts.
Almost anything can be used on the back.
Here are a few examples that I've used:

Flannel = you can never go wrong here!
Minky = yummy goodness!
Chenille = a personal favorite...love the weight & feel.
100% cotton = is this darling or what?
 It belongs to Amanda from North Carolina...wish it were mine!
Polar Fleece - SURPRISE!!!
Lately I've been using this a LOT.
I put a very thin batt, 70/30, in with it.
OH. MY. GOODNESS!
Have fun with your backings - they can be a creative as the tops!

  1. It's nice to hear all the choices. I was in a quilt shop and they were talking about a long arm quilter who automatically charges a $20 fee for minkee backing. I love the quilts I've seen with soft backings.

    1. What? An extra charge just for minkee...silliness! There is a trick to knowing how to load it on to the machine but once you conquer that it's never a problem. I love softness, too! Thanks for the comment!

  2. Thanks so much for the great ideas and beautiful photos! I make string quilts for Project Linus and love using polar fleece as one step backing and batting. My blocks are pieced on muslin and are pretty heavy with all the strings, the polar fleece creates a perfect cuddly quilt for a little one.

    1. Fleece would be perfect for the string/foundation quilts! I have a friend who makes Project Linus quilts - I'll pass this on to her. Thank you for your continued contribution to a beautiful program - you're a hero!

    I have never felt polar fleece.
    Is it the same as the regular one?

    1. I think polar fleece is a little heavier weight. I just use whatever pattern I like to match the quilt! It's divine!

  4. I would not have thought of fleece or chenille. Do you have to do pretty light quilting with them, like you do with Minky?

    1. Yep - you dont want to create a stiff quilt with a bunch of quilting. But, the results are so yummy, especially with a cold winter coming...mmmmmmmm!

  6. Boy am I stuck in a rut! I've always used the same kind of fabric for the backing that the top was pieced from. I will have to give minkee, polar fleece, and chenille a try! Thanks.
